Lands

Background:

  • The One Arrow Reserve No. 95 is located approximately 100 km northeast of Saskatoon and 50 km southwest of Prince Albert. Reserve No. 95 is located approximately 3 km east of Batoche National Historic Site.
  • Access to the One Arrow First Nation from the south, is provided along Provincial Highway #11 and then east on Highway #312 and then north on Highway #225. Access from the north is provided along Provincial Highway #2 and then east along Highway #225.
  • The One Arrow Reserve is situated in the Nisbet Plain landscape area of the Boreal Transition Ecoregion of Saskatchewan. In traditional understandings among First Nation communities, shared land use and widespread travel by community members is customary.

  • The traditional teachings of One Arrow speak of an obligation, “Everything on our land and water is living and needs to be respected.” The authority of One Arrow People is to govern lands and resources which flow from the Creator. The people must follow laws according to the culture, traditions and customs of One Arrow First Nation.
  • The Members (91) signed Treaty 6 at Fort Carlton in 1876. Chief One Arrow represented the membership.
  • The One Arrow First Nation Land Code, enacted in December of 2013, is the fundamental land law of the One Arrow First Nation – having withdrawn its lands and resources for the use and benefit of its members by adhering to the Framework Agreements on First Nation Land Management and having The First Nations Land Management Act apply to its lands. In accordance with the One Arrow’s Land Code, the First Nation can make laws respecting the development, conservation, protection, management, use and possession of First Nation lands, and interest and licenses in relation to those lands. This includes the power to make laws in relation to any matters necessary to protect One Arrow First Nation land and members.
  • The One Arrow First Nation has enacted Land Use Plan (2016). This law defines future use of designated land(s) and protection of land under land office regime meaning all use(s) and future use must be done with land department and according to plans, by-laws adopted by One Arrow Land Office.
